MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan, who is at odds with her family over the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend in the military. Despite the persistence of her veterans group counselor (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Ruben), and the frivolity of an unexpected love interest, Merit’s comfortable, failed friendship with Zoe keeps the two isolated from the world. That is, until estranged grandfather Merritt (Ed Harris), locked away in the family’s ancestral lake house, begins to lose his way and needs the one thing he refuses to give up… help. At its core, it’s a buddy movie about complicated friendships, divided families, and the complex ways we deal with grief.
